Overweight: US-listed Indian generic majors

FDA approval velocity has accelerated 18% YoY for the four largest Indian generic exporters. Domestic margin compression bottomed in Q3. The re-rating window opens before consensus catches up.

The thesis

Three forces are converging. First, ANDA approvals out of FDA inspection backlogs are clearing at the highest rate since 2019, disproportionately favouring exporters with multi-site capacity (Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s, Cipla, Lupin). Second, US generic price erosion has decelerated to roughly 3 percent, well below the 6–7 percent range that defined 2020–2023. Third, domestic price controls have stabilised post NLEM revision, lifting India-segment gross margins back above 60 percent.

The market is still pricing the 2022–23 narrative — generics as a commoditised, margin-compressed category. We disagree. The next 12–18 months should see consensus EPS revisions of 12–18 percent across the cohort, with US-segment revenue compounding at 14–16 percent on volume and mix.
